It’s bikini season!

Many of us are noticing our “winter layer” as we make the summer-time transition from down jackets to shorts and bathing suits… we should also take a minute to honestly evaluate the weight status of our pets.

Did you know that OVER HALF of all pet dogs and cats in the United States are overweight or obese?! A recent study by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention found that 53% of adult dogs and 55% of cats were classified as overweight or obese by their veterinarian. That equals 88.4 million pets that are too heavy!!

Though many of us find chubby pets adorable, there are very serious consequences to being overweight.  Obesity can lead to dangerous diseases in our companions, including diabetes, osteoarthritis, heart disease, breathing problems, heat stroke, and others.  Obese animals have also been shown to have a much shorter lifespan than their thinner pet counterparts.  Weight management is one of the best and most important things we can do for our beloved pets.

As you can tell from the statistics above, obesity is rampant in our pet population- but how did it get that way?  There are many factors contributing to weight gain in our pets: inappropriate diet, inadequate exercise, and sometimes even underlying endocrine conditions.  The great part is: most of these variables are under OUR control!  By scheduling regular veterinary exams and following diet and exercise plans, we can work together to improve the quality (and quantity) of life for our furry companions.

Help us combat the nationwide pet obesity epidemic by enrolling your pet in the annual We're Losin' It program, starting June 1st. We will kick off the weight loss season with weight consultations and exams by Dr. Andy and Dr. Ashley.   Through the We’re Losin’ It program, our dedicated team will take you through the basics of healthy weight assessment, weight loss strategies, as well as diet and exercise plans customized for your pet.  By committing your pets' weight loss journey, you may be also able to win a one-of-a-kind personalized pet portrait!

Please contact us to learn more about the We're Losin' It program and to schedule an initial weight assessment exam with our doctors, Andy and Ashley.
